Pathology 3240A Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Epithelium, Traffic Collision, Papanicolaou Stain
Document Summary
Pathology: study of structural and functional changes in cells, tissue and organs that underlie disease. Light microscopy: look at cells & tissues: pink for cytoplasm and blue stain for nucleus. Immunohistochemistry: using immune techniques (i. e. ab) to detect structures of the cell: brown stain to stain things (with antibodies, immunofluorescence: antibody is labelled with fluorescent marker. Electron microscopy: examining components of one cell (particles; glycogen; er, etc) Molecular pathology: looking at genes, chromosomes, etc. Normal epithelium cells changed into glandular epithelium due to acid from reflux repeated acid exposure (i. e. cancerous) Stained with h&e: (h= blue for nucleus; e = pink for cytoplasm) Normal = no glandular epithelium; glandular epithelium = tumour. For areas that are sensitive: use needle to poke things out and then smear it and stain the cells. When cells are injured in living organisms, they go through pattern(s) of response to that injury.
