BIOM20002 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Synaptic Plasticity, Excitatory Postsynaptic Potential, Inhibitory Postsynaptic Potential
Document Summary
Lecture 12 - cell-cell communication in the nervous system. Convergent pathway multiple neurons are collecting information that could be partly contributing to the end response. The neurons close to axon hillock are the direct voice in signaling initiation. Complexity of architecture maximizes possibility for receiving signals. Each dendrite of a neuron is packed with synapse getting information from everywhere. Voltage-gated channels respond to the change in electrical field from -70 mv to about +30 mv (the peak of activation) There could be interactions between epsps and ipsps because they are all graded potentials: they could occur in a post synaptic cell close together in time and space; or through intracellular charge interaction in a post synaptic cell. A motor neuron like this one would have its cell body in ventral horn of the spinal cord, and its axon would project signals from the ventral root to all skeletal muscles needed.
