BIOM20002 Lecture Notes - Lecture 40: Anal Canal, Cecum, Sigmoid Colon
Document Summary
More absorption at jejunum: wider lumen (higher calibre) because more gastral content and more absorption. Larger sa so more circular mucosal folds, makes walls thicker. Fat in the mesentery: mesentery is a double fold in the membrane with fat in between. Allows surgeons to distinguish different parts of intestine. Right (hepatic) colic flexure: turns ascending to transverse . Features of large intestine compared to small intestine: Has inner circular muscle coat, but outer longitudinal layer is split into 3 distinct muscle bands (tenia coli) Shorter muscle strands give it a baggy appearance (haustra/sacculations) Omental appendices: fatty tags that hang off tenia coli. Base attaches to the inferior aspect of the cecum where the three tenia coli meet at infralmedial aspect of caecum. This place is the tip of the appendix. The position of this can vary immensely between people. So surgeons can find it by identifying where the 3 muscle layers go.
