Document Summary

Receives all venous return from body and heart itself. Fossa ovalis: would connect up to the la. In fetus it is the ovalis foramen (the hole in the heart). Walls all covered with muscular ridges except for a small region just below the pulmonary valve. Papillary muscles: base of muscular ridge is attached to the wall but the apex projects into the lumen. Apex attaches to chordae tendinae (fibrous chords) which attach to edge of atrioventricular cusps (the tricuspid valves). Covered with ridges except for area under aortic valve. Left ventricle has 2 papillary muscles (right has 3) Supports and provide attachment to cusps of av valves - tricuspid valve between ra and rv and mitral (bicuspid) valve between la and lv. Provides attachment for myocardium (atria and ventricular muscles) Forms an electrical insulator between muscle masses, by separating the atrial musculature from the ventricular musculature.
