Document Summary

Sits in between the 3 bones of the pelvis. Rectum changes to anus just as it passes diaphragm. Puborectalis: attaches to pubis anteriorly and hooks around junction of rectum and anus. If you contract it pulls rectal- anal junction forward forming a kink. Closer to skin = superficial (i. e. out of page) Levator ani: contracts to pull anus up (parts named by attachments) Connective tissue that closes off most of urogenital triangle. Has openings for urethra (male and female) and vagina (female) Deep perineal pouch: potential space between perineal membrane and diaphragm. Space above perineal membrane and enclosed largely by urogenital hiatus above. Contains skeletal muscle that forms sphincters around urethra and vagina, Perineum, levator ani and perineal fascia can be injured during childbirth. If labour happens too quickly muscles won"t be able to take time to stretch. Medial fibres around the urogenital hiatus (levator ani) can be damaged.
