Document Summary

Vasectomy involves ligating duct to prevent sperm from reaching penis. Each gland has ducts which open into urethra. Ducts of seminal vesicles joins vas deferens to form ejaculatory duct, which empties into prostate. Contribute to volume of semen and provides fructose (an energy source for sperm) and a coagulating agent which is important for post ejaculation. Ejaculatory duct pierces prostate and enters into prostatic urethra, feeds into membranous urethra, then feeds into penile urethra. Duct pierces perineal membrane and opens into penile/spongy urethra. Produces mucus important for lubricating urethra to protect sperm coming out. Many (30-40) separate glands with ducts that open directly into the prostatic urethra. Provides approximately 20% of the volume of semen. A pair of ejaculatory ducts (one for each vas deferens/seminal vesicle) pierce prostate to empty into posterior of prostatic urethra. Hypertrophy of central prostate - benign prostatic enlargement. Compresses urethra and can eventually block it entirely.
