BIOM30001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Fibronectin, Elastin, Tissue Engineering
Document Summary
15: stem cells & tissue engineering - integrated biomedical technologies. Have an good understanding of key concepts in stem cell biology. Have gained an appreciation for tissue engineering including potential application, design considerations and limitations. Be thinking about how stem cells and tissue engineering relate to all topics in frontiers in. Operational definition: stem cells maintain tissue and organ integrity by sustaining life long production of mature, functional cells in the steady state (homeostasis) and in response to occasional stress (repair) Understand how alterations to steady state can result in disease. Cancer often from a stem cell like cell that becomes dysregulated. Clonal repopulation: one cell can repopulate all cells within a lineage. Multi-lineage differentiation: can produce several types of cells. Present in low numbers - rare, 1 in 50000 in bone marrow. Morphologically unrecognisable: don"t have features associated with mature cell type. Lack phenotypic markers (difficult to identify and characterise stem cells)
