Document Summary

Endogenous stem cells and the stem cell cycle. Adult stem cell: multipotent: can only differentiate within its germ layer, sometimes unipotent, found in niches that support and signal to it, found in adults, all over the body, found upon gastrulation (post-blastocyst) Pockets of what used to be pluripotent, now mulitpotent. Even though they are in a gastrula, they are still called adult stem cells: not active all the time. Most are quiescent but not all, depends on where their found. In a real high turn over cell, like the intestine, they are dividing all the time and creating new cells to populate the intestine. Shared adult stem cell properties: self-renew. Self replenish: shared signaling pathways, multidrug resistance, plasticity. Can give rise to something different than itself. We can also change what it changes into. Shared signaling pathways: get signals from many different places. Soluble factors (endocrine system: ex. signal to differentiate, signal to self renew.
