Document Summary

"tissue engineering" uses implanted cells, scaffolds, dna, protein, and/or protein fragments to replace or repair injured or diseased tissues and organs. Much stress and strain in the body: in vivo stress/strain histories need to be measured for a variety of activities. Challenge for engineers: characterising properties of the human body. Structure of bone: trabecular bone composed of a network of branching interconnected sheets and bars - trabeculae. This internal structure creates a series of interconnected spaces that are filled with vascular tissue called marrow, a functional part of the circulatory system producing red and white blood cells. Quasi static tensile/compression tests conducted using instron micro-tester. Machine compresses material, gives information about load applied to the sample and the amount of deformation - these 2 data describe the properties of sample. Can find the equation of this plot: gradient = stress/strain. The stress-strain curve for bone in tension has three distinct regions. Initial region: curve is nearly a straight line.
