Document Summary

Objectives describe the roles and significance of biomaterials in tissue engineering outline the design criteria and processes used to select, fabricate and tailor biomaterials for tissue engineering understand the key limitations and challenges of using biomaterials in tissue engineering. Tissue engineering - an introduction (cid:862)the loss o(cid:396) failu(cid:396)e of a(cid:374) o(cid:396)ga(cid:374) o(cid:396) tissue is o(cid:374)e of the (cid:373)ost f(cid:396)e(cid:395)ue(cid:374)t, devastati(cid:374)g, a(cid:374)d (cid:272)ostly problems in human health care. A new field, tissue engineering, applies the principles of biology and engineering to the develop(cid:373)e(cid:374)t of fu(cid:374)(cid:272)tio(cid:374)al su(cid:271)stitutes fo(cid:396) da(cid:373)aged tissue. (cid:863) Aims to generate new functional tissue to repair or replace tissues missing due to disease, genetic defects or trauma. Promise of: alleviating tissue shortages (of donor organs) superior results. Customised implants new treatments where none currently suffice e. g. spinal cord damage. Technical: how to grow cells, create biomaterial contracts, get blood supply working etc. Regulatory: how do i get approval, that it is ethical and safe.
