The disintegration of an empire always has two components - a demand by the subject people for independence and the inability or unwillingness of the imperial power to resist it, - Rebellions in early 19thc by span settlers. Campaign by simon bolivar (1813-24) in s. america, including andes. Battle of ayacucho in 1824 signalled end of span crown rule. By 1824, independence of all span america, except cuba (1898) King joao vi and portuguese court fled and transferred its seat to brazil from. He returned to portugal in 1821, after french ousted with british assistance. His son, pedro, declared brazil"s independence in 1822. Economic factor: frustration w monopoly of trade; span and port"s relative econ decline. Ideological factor: influence of liberal political ideas from the american (1783) and french (1789) revolutions. Napoleonic wars (1799 - 1815) in europe, with spain and portugal in turmoil: Spain allied with french & defeated by british at battle of trafalgar (1805)
