EVSC30006 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Urban Ecology, Ecosystem Services, Urban Design
LECTURE 20: CONSERVATION ACTION IN CITIES
• Strategies for conserving urban biodiversity & ecosystem services:
o Increase awareness
o Integrate urban ecology with planning & design – biodiversity sensitive urban design
▪ Different types of actions determined by target species
▪ Improves probability of persistence of certain species
o Protect biodiverse features
o Maintain or re-establish connectivity
o Grow a green city
o Use small spaces
INCREASING AWARENESS
• Debate about effect of people on ecosystem services
o Can be positive correlation between presence of people & increasing ecosystem services
• Leopards eating dogs with rabies in Mumbai – ecosystem services for people
Shared Urban Habitat Project
• Overview: sharing of urban habitat, engaging people with nature, benefits of biodiversity in urban areas
• 30% of EPBC-listed threatened species are found in Australian cities
o Need to work on how to best preserve & protected them
o Some have ranges entirely within cities
• Which species should be brought back to cities? Depends on social, cultural and ecological considerations
o Importantly need social licence to operate
• Conservation of urban bell frogs: some species threatened by urban processes, some thriving
Document Summary
Strategies for conserving urban biodiversity & ecosystem services: Integrate urban ecology with planning & design biodiversity sensitive urban design: different types of actions determined by target species. Improves probability of persistence of certain species: protect biodiverse features, maintain or re-establish connectivity, grow a green city, use small spaces. Increasing awareness: debate about effect of people on ecosystem services, can be positive correlation between presence of people & increasing ecosystem services. Leopards eating dogs with rabies in mumbai ecosystem services for people. Shared urban habitat project: overview: sharing of urban habitat, engaging people with nature, benefits of biodiversity in urban areas. 30% of epbc-listed threatened species are found in australian cities: need to work on how to best preserve & protected them.
