FASTING:
Long period of food shortage à problem
o stored fat alone is enough (can’t make glucose for the brain)
Protein from muscles = broken down for glucose production
o This eventually becomes limited
o CNS must then use ketone bodies from fat for energy
§ Ketosis = Emergency route
§ Causes suppression of appetite
§ However, not good for long-term
Type 2 diabetic:
High insulin levels
Cells don’t respond to insulin
Glucose stays in the blood
Makes a lot of insulin but it’s not working
High insulin BLOCKS FAT BURN
Low carb = low glucose = GOOD
