FOOD20003 Lecture 19: W7 Energy Metabolism - PART 2
FEASTING – excess amounts of energy
FASTING:
• Long period of food shortage à problem
o stored fat alone is enough (can’t make glucose for the brain)
• Protein from muscles = broken down for glucose production
o This eventually becomes limited
o CNS must then use ketone bodies from fat for energy
§ Ketosis = Emergency route
§ Causes suppression of appetite
§ However, not good for long-term
Type 2 diabetic:
• High insulin levels
• Cells don’t respond to insulin
• Glucose stays in the blood
• Makes a lot of insulin but it’s not working
• High insulin BLOCKS FAT BURN
• Low carb = low glucose = GOOD
