FOOD20003 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Nitrogen Balance, Ketosis, Acetyl-Coa
Document Summary
Amino acid pool is made of free amino acids and those from dietary protein intake. Can be used to make new proteins or nitrogen removed so the amino acid can be used an energy source. In a healthy adult protein degradation = protein synthesis, nitrogen balance. In childhood, pregnancy and recovery from illness likely to be in positive nitrogen balan (taking in more protein nitrogen than being excreted) Negative balance occurs in illness, starvation, injury (losing more protein nitrogen than being consumed) Not enough nitrogen because it is being broken down and then peed out. Takes 2 ammonia and sticks to carbon dioxide molecule -> makes urea. High protein intake -> very dark yellow (more urea) Ppl with kidney failure fail to excrete urea. Excreting nitrogen from the body from dietary protein. Excess dietary protein presents the body with an excess of toxic nitrogen that must be excreted sed as alance than t be excreted.
