Week 10 lecture: nothing about art in the qur"an, the concept of creation or imitation in art. This challenges the belief in god as the only creator- where art exists, there exists an artist that is assuming the role of god: verily! Our word unto a thing when we intend it, is only that we say unto it: Be! and it is. (16:40: hadith: those who make pictures will be punished on the day of. However, this was a political act not a rejection of art. They represented polytheism, not creativity : art in medina period (622-661)- architecture, the ka"aba, problems with pictorial images and the development of calligraphy. Islamic art- yellow (light, divinity), turquoise (sky, infinity: the rise of pictorial art in islam- the safawid dynasty (1501-1732) encouraged artists to draw and depict the daily activities of the royal family. Iran- mughal empire in india (1526-1858) encouraged images and pictures.
