* in visual perception, we must interpret retinal activation in the context of what information we have about higher-order aspects in the visual scene e. g. objects and their properties. The processing in the visual system goes through the thalamus to highe(cid:396) o(cid:396)de(cid:396) pa(cid:396)ts of the (cid:272)o(cid:396)te(cid:454), it"s e(cid:454)t(cid:396)a(cid:272)ti(cid:374)g from the retinal pattern what the meaning of it is. It is a little different because we are not trying to build a picture of the 3d objects in the environment. A lot of what we do with the auditory system is to do with location of things that make or reflect noise and particularly we want to tie noises to objects. For humans, the auditory system is very important for verbal communication. We still have to do processing of that auditory information to break it up into components to work out what goes with what (the object to the sound): what is detected:
