PHIL10003 Lecture 19: disinterested liking, subjective universality
Lecture 19: disinterested liking, subjective universality
Disinterested liking
• Interest: to take pleasure in
• The good: like through its concept
• Intrinsically good: like for its own sake
• Pleasure that involves knowledge
• The world ould e differet ut it does’t atter as log as you uderstad it
• If you understand moral ideas, you will want the world to be that way -> 'intrinsically
good'
• We should be moved by the sheer force of ideas
• Good for = usefulness -> less obvi -> there are means that are 'good for' bad ends
• If something is good for a bad end, when u understand that, you wont want it to exist ->
rational connection betw goodness and good form
Beauty and good
• Traditional connection
• Can appreciate beauty = mark of sophisticated mind
• Trying to engage w and oppose rationalist views of beauty
• Beauty as a form of perfection relies on the concept of perfection -> WRONG
• Flowers, free designs, lines endlessly intertwined -> beauty in terms of form -> RIGHT WAY
Empirical interest
• Dev a sense of community
• Doing to impress others
• The whole game of expecting to be judge and to judge is shared in community
• not central to aesthetic judgement
Intellectual interest
• Character building
• Sophistication in knowing beauty
• Beauty in general (art, nature) -> mistake -> to be interested in natural beauty = sign of
good character, interested in artistic beauty - not sign of good bc art can lie
• Kant recognizes the interest in beauty and art to dev characteristic
• Not relevant to pure judgements of taste
Positive lessons
• Judgements of beauty linked w presentation in the subj
• Also linked w reflection
• Kant's example of (free) beauty -> model of what he thinks beauty is like
When I say … is beautiful..
• I can reasonably expect everyone to agree w me
