Structure & Function of the human nervous system (1)
-neural axes:
-rostral (anterior) - towards the snoot
-caudal (posterior) - toward the tail
-dorsal (superior) - towards the back
-ventral (inferior) - toward the belly
-describes both the brain and the body
-for humans, a bit different
-humans stand upright, so neuraxis bends
-top of head perpendicular to the back
-major divisions of nervous system:
-central nervous system (brain & spinal cord) &
-peripheral nervous system (spinal & cranial nerves) :
-somatic system (connects CS to voluntary muscles) &
-autonomic system (connects CS to involuntary muscles)
-sympathetic system (arousing, uses energy) &
-parasympathetic system (calming, restoring body)
-meninges - 3 layered sheath around brain & spinal cord
-dura mater - outermost covering around the brain
-senses fluid, prevents brain from coming into contact w the skull
-arachnoid mater - spider web like structure -
-extends around CNS, enables cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) to flow around
-pia mater - extends over surface of the cortex
-blood vessels are there too - bring O2 to the brain
-cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
-clear fluid, like plasma
-supports brain, reduces shock from head movements
-created by choroid plexus; reabsorbed into bloodstream by arachnoid villi
-overproduction of CSF - obstructive hydrocephalus - damage brain tissue, occlude arteries
-ventricles (look at lecture notes)
-development of CNS
-develops fairly early, 18 days after conception
-forms neural tube
-28 days = forebrain, hindbrain, midbrain & start becoming differentiated over time

Document Summary

Structure & function of the human nervous system (1) Describes both the brain and the body. Top of head perpendicular to the back. Central nervous system (brain & spinal cord) & Peripheral nervous system (spinal & cranial nerves) : Somatic system (connects cs to voluntary muscles) & Autonomic system (connects cs to involuntary muscles) Meninges - 3 layered sheath around brain & spinal cord. Dura mater - outermost covering around the brain. Senses fluid, prevents brain from coming into contact w the skull. Arachnoid mater - spider web like structure - Extends around cns, enables cerebral spinal fluid (csf) to flow around. Pia mater - extends over surface of the cortex. Blood vessels are there too - bring o2 to the brain. Supports brain, reduces shock from head movements. Created by choroid plexus; reabsorbed into bloodstream by arachnoid villi. Overproduction of csf - obstructive hydrocephalus - damage brain tissue, occlude arteries. Develops fairly early, 18 days after conception.
