THE CASE OF KITTY GENOVESE
March 13, 1964, 3:15am in NYC
Kitty Genovese – a daughter of a middle class Italian American family, came home after work to
her apartment
About 30m from her apartment’s door, she was attacked by Winston Moseley
oShe escaped once when a neighbour saw the attack and yelled at him
She dragged herself near the apartment, but apparently lost consciousness outside it
Later, Moseley returned to attack her further, and Kitty was eventually killed
Moseley was caught, sentenced and imprisoned in 1967, his parole application was denied in
December, 2013
WHY IS THIS CASE SO FAMOUS?
27 March, 1964 – The New York Times published an article, “Thiry-eight who saw murder didn’t
call the police”
“For more than half an hour thirty-eight respectable, law-abiding citizens in Queens watched a
killer stalk ad stab a woman in three separate attacks in Kew Gardens”
One unidentified neighbour was quoted, “I didn’t want to get involved”
WHY DIDN’T PEOPLE INTERVENE?
Why so many bystanders did not act in the emergency situation? (Bystander inaction)
oBecause it was in New York City?
oUrbanisation and callousness? In small villages, this wouldn’t have happened?
Lack of human connection in larger cities (more likely to get help in smaller area)
oSheer presence of others
If someone does it  join in
No one does it  do nothing
