Until a few hundred years ago, children in western society were not perceived as fully edged members of society or even genuine human beings (aries 1962) In medieval times, infants tended to be regarded rathe like talented pets. Children graduated to adult status early in life (age 7 or 8) to take on major, adult like tasks in the community. At that time, children in year 2 or 3 would have been caring for younger siblings, working in elds or apprenticing to a family to learn a trade. By the 19th century, childhood became valued as a unique time di erent from adulthood. As society was becoming less rural and more industrialised.
