Mood disorders involve a depression or elevation of mood as the primary disturbance. 5 or more symptoms must be present for over two weeks. Recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal ideation, or suicide attempt. Decrease or increase in appetite or signi cant weight loss or gain. Seasonal pattern (seasonal a ective disorder [sad] or winter depression) No history of mania, hypomania, or mixed episode unless substance or medical illness related. Family history of mdd increases risk 1. 5-3 times. Up to 25% of patients with major medical comorbidity (diabetes, cancer) will get mdd. Often comorbid with one or more anxiety disorders. Specify with or without agoraphobia anxiety/fear about being in places/situations where escape may be di cult. 30-50% of panic cases have this quali er present. Recurrent unexpected panic attacks and for a one month period or more of. Signi cant change in behaviour because of the attacks. Panic attack: intense period of fear where 4 symptoms develop/peak in 10 minutes.
