- Ion channels: gate for ions; charge of neuron firing → driven by total concentration of
negative or positive charged ions in cell
- Change in charge (electricity flows through) → ions are allowed to flow in and out of
the neuron rapidly → neurotransmitter docking on → will allow more or less ions to
flow through → direct and rapid impact on activity of neuron
-
- G protein-coupled receptors (second messengers): neurotransmitter docks on
outside → wont directly impact; allow energy to mediate a subsequent downstream
event; can trigger ion channel opening
- Receptor specificity: receptors are very selective (lock and key); each receptor can
generally only be activated by one neurotransmitter (or a drug that is designed to
mimic that neurotransmitter); they also have a very specific function/action → when a
neurotransmitter binds to the receptor this will trigger the same event every time
(either opening a channel or triggering a second messenger event)
