PSYC20008 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Social Learning Theory, Cognitive Model, Social Cognition
Document Summary
Learning behaviour from others: social cognitive theory. The development of self-concept (self-understanding) occurs at the same time as the development of social cognition: social cognitive model of learning behaviour. Children learn by: observing the behaviours of person a, observing how others react (person b/ c) to those behaviour, observing how them self (the child) feel about those behaviours, social learning theory. Findings: children who witnessed the actor being punished for their aggressive behaviour imitated fewer behaviours, unprompted, children easily reproduced behaviours when prompted and offered incentives. **danger of showing aggressive behaviour in front of children: telling children not to perform aggressive behaviour is not effective. Because they have already learnt in cognitively while watching. (applicable to non-aggression behaviours too) Learning others" perspectives: role taking (similar to tom) Practicing awareness of the perspective of another person (put oneself in other"s shoe) Better understanding that person"s behaviour, thoughts and feeling.
