Document Summary
Evidence that the processing of facial expression is innate. Darwin (1872) universal facial expression hypothesis: animals are evolved to recognise emotional expression. Facial expressions are similar in closely related species. Suggestion that decoding of facial expression is innate: ability to decode intention conveys benefit. Facial expressions allow for rapid communication they are produced when there is emotional stimulus and an audience present. This ability increases chances of survival our i(cid:374)terpretatio(cid:374) of a(cid:374)other"s e(cid:373)otio(cid:374) modulates our behaviour and vice versa. Processing facial expression is important for responding to threats. Jacobs, renken, aleman & cornelissen (2012) amygdala may guide attention to emotionally relevant information: specific types of emotions may be particularly important, anger superiority effect threat responses from visual stimuli, superiority effect for other emotions. Becker et al. (2011) some people find an advantage for happy faces. Effect is dependent on the stimulus set and feature strength. Lipp & becker (2012) whites of teeth is a particularly important feature.
