Theory: primal objects of disgust: evolved from food rejection, faeces as primordial disgust object. Those species are unclean, which are imperfect members of their class, or whose class itself confounds the general scheme of the world. Theory: sympathetic magic: disgust operates in a way that resembles magic based on imitation or correspondence, merely look like a disgusting object is enough to be disgusting, contact with a disgusting object is seen as contaminating. Theory: oral to moral: disgust started out as a food rejection emotion but broadened out to violations of social norms, moral outrage at particular violations: pedophilia or extreme unfairness, extension of revulsion to morally contaminating behaviour. Morality of disgust: disgust can amplify moral judgements, especially to perceived violations of. Purity : behaviours are judged more negatively under hypnotically induced disgust and disgusting smells. Behavioural immune system: the two systems may interact, selective defecation/fecal avoidance, grooming and cleansing, territorial behaviour to exclude external organisms.
