The complexities of identities in flux through bourdieu"s notions of habitus and field. Bourdieu- when an individual encounters an unfamiliar field, habitus is transformed. How the movement of habitus across new, unfamiliar fields results in a habitus divided against itself. Research results- the challenge of the unfamiliar results in a range of creative adaptations and multi-faceted responses. Self-scrutiny and self- improvement, but still retains key values aspects of a working-class self. Studied nine working-class students in an elite english university. None of their parents had ever attended university. Three main forms of capital= economic, cultural and social. Habitus= complex interplay between past and present, refers to something historical linked to individual history". They are permeable and responsive to what is going on around them embodiment. Current circumstances are internalised and become another layer to add to those from earlier socialisations.
