Technological determinism- all social change comes from technological development. Actor network theory- how human and non-human elements are part of network. Networked individualism- our social networks change over time. Sustained and intentional collective effort, usually operating outside of the established institutional channels to bring about change. Some are legal, some operate as illegal and underground groups. E. g. feminism, and the american civil rights movement: collective behaviour and social unrest. Unconventional protest activities outside the sphere of formal party politics. Movements as active" (outward-looking) or expensive" (inward-looking) Members behave in rational ways and movements are purposeful, not chaotic. Social unrest is always present, so movements cannot be explained by it. What turns chronic discontent into social movements is the availability of resources to challenge the established order- social movement industry: new social movements theory. New issues (climate change, quality of life, animal welfare) New organisational forms (looser, digital, no one leader)
