The average is taken of the anomalies (departures) from the average for a base period. It removes the effect of the large differences in temperature with height in mountains, or between inland and oceans. The global mean temperature calculated from anomalies provide accurate estimates for fewer locations. For average annual northern hemisphere temperature, there is medium confidence that. 1981-2010 was the warmest 30-year period of the last 1300 years and it is very likely that it was the warmest of the last 800 years.
