Week 4: Balance Sheets
Balance Sheet: One of the 4 main financial reports that are prepared for external users. BUT it
is not just prepared at the end of the period for external reporting requirements, they are used
by managers to make internal decisions as well. For example, prepared as part of the budget.
Includes:
o Asset
o Liabilities
o Owners' Equity
Provides valuable insight into its wealth, composition of assets and its debt levels.
Business structure has an impact on the way the end of period financial reports are prepared
in Australia.
Sole traders and partnership: only need to prepared simple financial reports for example for
banks and taxation authorities, they are excused from the complex accounting processes that
need to be completed otherwise
Investing decisions and financing decision impact the balance sheet:
