An overview of the important sentence structures of modern standard chinese is begun with equal emphasis on the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students will also be introduced to culture and customs as they relate to everyday life. Reference for languages a1): the ability to use the pinyin romanisation system, a basic critical understanding of chinese culture and customs as they relate to daily life. Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. A unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week.
