Document Summary

One human being having a right of ownership over another. The ability to exert almost complete control over another person. Exploitation of another human being in a way that is equivalent to slavery and inclusion of (cid:858)lesser(cid:859) forms of servitude. Debt bondage: people sell themselves into slavery by taking loans they cannot afford, they then take on contractual obligations of labour to pay back the loan. Descent-based slavery: entire families kept in slavery as ownership passes on from one generation to the next. European expansion into asia in 19th century needed cheap labour to sustain growth. By mid 1830"s a fairly sophisticated and formalised system had emerged, centred on china and india. Plays an integral role in maintaining the modern consumer driven liberal economy. Trans-national nature of offences, slavery and supply chains: product production being outsourced, and supply chains getting longer make slavery harder to detect.
