1. LECTURE 19 : PLANT DIVERSITY I
Prescribed Readings: Concepts 26.6, 27.4, 28.1-28.4
Objectives :
After reading the chapters and attending the lectures students should be able to:
Discuss the origins of photosynthetic life in bacteria and eukaryotes
Outline the basic characteristics of the main groups of Protista.
Explain the evidence to support the proposed endosymbiotic origin of
mitochondria and chloroplasts
Describe the origin of land plants
Explain the key features of land plants including their life cycle
Concept 26.6 Our understanding of the tree of
life continues to change based on new data
From Two Kingdoms to Three Domains
Monera, Protista, Plantae, Fungi and Animalia
Two fundamental different types of cells,
prokaryotic and eukaryotes.
Prokaryotes apart from all eukaryotes by placing
them in their own kingdom, Monera.
Three domains- Bacteria, Archaea, Eukarya
Bacteria contains most of the currently known
prokaryotes while domain Archaes consists of a diverse
group of prokaryotic organism that inhibit a wide
variety of environments.
Eukarya consists of all the organism that have cells containing true nuclei.
Includes single-celled organism as well as multicellular plants, fungi and animals.
Of five kingdoms, most biologist continue to recognize Plantae, Fungi and Animalia, but
not Monera and Protista.
The three-domain system highlight the fact that much of the history of life has been
about single-celled organisms.

Two prokaryotic domains consist entirely
of single-cells organisms, even in Eukarya,
only the branches labeled in red type
(plants, fungi and animals).
Horizontal Gene Transfer: A process in
which genes are transferred from one
genome to another through mechanism
such as exchange of transposable elements
and plasmids, viral infection and perhaps
fusions of organism.
Concept 27. 4 Prokaryotes have
radiated into a diverse set of lineages
Bacteria
Bacteria include the vast majority of prokaryotic species familiar to most peole.
Major mode of nutrition and metabolism is represented among bacteria, and even a
small taxonomic group of bacteria may contain species exhibiting many different
nutritional modes.
