BMS1062 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Aflatoxin, Exon, Dna Replication
Document Summary
Lecture 8 : mutagenesis and the nature of mutations. Understand why the impact of mutation is so variable know the difference between inherited and non-inherited mutations be able to illustrate the major classes of mutation (point mutation, inversion etc. ), with an emphasis on the nature and impact of point mutations in coding sequences. Be aware of what can cause mutations and that many can be repaired. Definition : change in the nucleotide sequence in dna. Effect : a mutation can occur anywhere in dna. If it occurs within a gene, it may or may not have an effect in its encoded protein. The impact may be : beneficial (evolution) negative (disease) neutral ( inconsequential) eg: if mutation occurs in an intron, though this may still be problematic if the mutation affects a promoter site. The location of dna mutation is important because they can occur both in coding" regions and non-coding" regions.
