Document Summary

Lecture 12 : organisation of dna in microbial genomes. What is the diversity of genomic structure observed in different microbes. How can we exploit these systems in the context of our own experimental approaches. Viruses protein coat containing dna or rna inactive while extracellular can inject genomic material into host cells. Rna viruses can be double or single stranded rna genomes. Dna viruses can have double or single stranded dna genomes includes t4 bacteriophages and the smallpox virus. Genome can be up to 2. 5 mb long ( mega base ) Generally bacteria have a single circular chromosomes. 500 kb - 10 mb long eg of single circular chromosome bacteria : e. coli, neisseria meningitis. Some have linear and some have both linear and circular chromosomes eg : agrobacterium tumefaciens. Contains genes essential for all environments can either have 1 or 2 chromosomes and can either be circular, linear or both.
