BMS1042 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Bradford Hill Criteria, Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Tobacco Control
Document Summary
Be able to identify the main areas of public health in a current and historical context. Critical issues in epidemiology: causation to control of health problems. The study of the distribution and determinants of health and disease in populations, and the application of this study. A risk factor is sufficient, if the presence of the factor alone is enough to result in disease. A risk factor is necessary, if the disease is never present when the factor is not present. To get tuberculosis, it is necessary to be exposed to mycobacterium tuberculosis but the exposure in itself is not sufficient for the disease state to occur. Cigarette smoking is neither necessary or sufficient for the development of lung cancer. Strength (a weak relationship does not mean a factor is not causal e. g. smoking) Communicable: an infectious disease transmissible by direct contact with an affected individual, discharges or vectors.
