A measurement of the amount of ink used to represent data in ratio. Data-ink ratio = ink for elements that encode data total ink for all elements. Data-ink ratio should be close to 1. Ornamental elements should be removed (= chartchunk) Strip away ink not dedicated to data. Does not add to the understanding of data. Need to nd balance between decorative graphical design and increasing data-ink ratio. Well-designed ornamental elements can increase memorability, and create good feeling about an artifact. Eye moves from left to right and from top to bottom. The order in which frames are placed and arranged in the visual space can have a time implication. Purpose of a narrative is to capture the cognitive thread for our viewers. Graphics can be read in whole images and in small parts. Often personal and unique to each viewer. Comparing two data sets that have no real meaning together.
