What are the aims of the cjs: overall aim of cjs is the prevention of certain kinds of behavior that society regards as either harmful or potentially harmful. Informally amongst individuals: administratively (tickets or fines, civil laws, criminal laws and the cjs. Operate through threats of sanction: whose social interests are represented by the state, 3 approaches, conservative: consensus of values in society, and the state is viewed as neutral - it"ll defend and protect our individual rights. State will respond to pressures generated by different groups, and main function is to resolve conflicts between competing groups: radical: state is an agency of social power, and primarily serves the interests of more powerful groups. State functions to preserve, maintain and extend the powers of the dominant groups in society. Why should behavior be criminalized: morally wrong. Immoral behavior erodes the social fabric of society, and consequently destabilizes society.
