Document Summary

Personal identity: are you the same person that you were 10 years or that you will be 10 years from now, we need to know the criteria for being the same person. Sameness - qualitative sameness/difference: really similar so you have the same properties, e. g. a can of coke but no can of coke is the same as a can of fanta, change haircut, personal characteristics, fashion sense. If a = b, then anything true of a is also true of b and vice versa. If x identical with y, then all non-relational properties borne by x are borne with y: qualitative identity (exact similarity) is a necessary condition of synchronic personal identity. But it is neither necessary nor sufficient for diarhonsic (over time) personal identity. False memories may feel like memories from the inside but they are not the real thing. So if you remember doing x, then you really did do x.
