MGC1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Hawthorne Effect, Industrial Revolution, Scientific Management
MGC1010 Week 2 - Evolution of Management
Historical evolutions in management
●Hawthorne studies
●Allow us to identify our mistakes and improve
●“High-order organisation”
●All civilisations and organisations exemplify fundamental managerial concepts
●Segregation by gender, culture and other means in order to maintain survival. This
was a form of management.
●In the past there were informal organisations which relied on informal practices.
●Management is evolution and progress at play.
There were multiple examples of management:
●Sumerians began management in bookkeeping
●The Egyptians created the pyramids (estimated 230000 workers 23 years to create the
pyramid of giza)
●Dutch East India Company
○7.4 trillion dollars in todays term vs Apple’s 750 billion
○Stringent managerial practices were necessary
Industrial revolution:
●Machines began to render people redundant (increased criminality, unemployment,
poverty.
PRE, AND EARLY 20TH CENTURY
●Germany had no one to rely on and fewer natural resources.
●US began to build status and power
●Landowners had the power over government and guided decisions (in Britain), but did
not progress because they “leeched” off of their economy.
●The US progressed because factory owners had wealth due to their constant attempts
to become more educated and increase profits.
Classical Approach
Scientific management
· Frederick Winston Taylor
●Father of scientific management
●Noted the lack of effectiveness and efficiency in workers soldiering on.
●Created a system to make ‘reproducible” days
●Alignment b/w managers and employees
· 4 principles
1. Develop a science and rules for each aspect of work
