1. What is a Coroner? *
"The coroner is a judicial officer who is responsible for the independent investigation of reportable
deaths (and fires), with the objective of reducing the number of preventable deaths (and fires) and
promoting public health and safety." (Coroners Court of Victoria, 2013)
FUNCTIONS OF THE CORONER
Independent investigation of (reportable) deaths including:

Investigation of every aspect of fires which raise public and community issues, to conclude:

2. What is a reportable death? *
Section 4 of the Coroners Act 2008 (Vic) defines this to include deaths that:

3. When does a medical procedure related to death become reportable? *
When the death occurs during, or following, a medical procedure where the doctor would not have
expected the death to occur.
