PHA3801 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Neuraminidase Inhibitor, Clotrimazole, Dimorphic Fungus
Document Summary
Many are of economic importance (e. g. yeast in brewing, ab production e. g. penicillins). Present in environment or may co-exist w humans as commensals. Infections (mycosis): usually associated w skin or mucous membranes in temperate climates and in otherwise healthy individuals, fungal infections are mainly benign. Reasons for inc fungal infections (most due to suppressed immune): widespread use of broad band ab"s, spread of aids, use of immunosuppressants, cancer chemotherapy, prolonged use of corticosteroids, dm. Opportunistic infections infections that rarely cause disease in healthy individuals but do in immunocompromised. Classification: mainly based on morphological characteristics (hyphae complex mycelium) Yeast like fungi: produce a structure resembling a mycelium e. g. c. albicans thrush, systemic candidiasis. Filamentous fungi: = true mycelium e. g. trichophyton sp, microsporum sp, aspergillus fimigatus skin and nail infections, pulmonary aspergillosis. Dimorphic fungi: can grow as yeast of filamentous fungi can cause 1" infections often restricted to certain regions. Common drugs use in tx of fungal infections:
