Week 1 Part 2
APGAR Scale
-After birth at 1&5 min score is given for each sign (if there are problems additional score
is given at 10 min)
Interpreting:
-8 to 10 = normal
-4 to 7 = might require some resuscitative measures
-3 to 0 = requires immediate resuscitation (existing foetal problems, difficulties anoxia)
Born too small & too soon
Gestational age (GA) in weeks
a full term = 40 weeks
pre term = less than 37 weeks!
- moderate to late pre term: 32-37 weeks!
- very preterm <32 weeks!
- extremely preterm <28 weeks
Preterm Birth
-Pre term birth is the most important cause of perinatal mortality and morbidity in
industrialised countries
-Rate of pre term 5-12%
-approx. 50% of pre-term children have a motor, cognitive or behavioural impairments

Document Summary

After birth at 1&5 min score is given for each sign (if there are problems additional score is given at 10 min) 4 to 7 = might require some resuscitative measures. 3 to 0 = requires immediate resuscitation (existing foetal problems, dif culties anoxia) Gestational age (ga) in weeks: a full term = 40 weeks, pre term = less than 37 weeks. Moderate to late pre term: 32-37 weeks. Pre term birth is the most important cause of perinatal mortality and morbidity in industrialised countries. 50% of pre-term children have a motor, cognitive or behavioural impairments. Chances of a foetus surviving greatly improve after 28 to 32 weeks in ga. Causes of preterm and low birth weight delivery. Some due to early induction of labour or c-section. Post - mature birth: too late, too large. Risks: blood supply from placenta will become insuf cient. Blood supply to brain decreased = brain damage.
