Early childhood = first phase of childhood, lasting from age 3 through kindergarten, or about age 5. Middle childhood = second phase of childhood, covering the elementary school years, from about age 6-11. Frontal lobes = area at the uppermost front of the brain, responsible for reasoning and planning our actions. Age 2 picks up small objects with thumb and forefinger. Catches and controls a large bounced ball across the body. Hops on each foot for 1 meter but still holds railing. Catches and controls a 10 inch ball in both hands with arms in front of body. Main threat: lack of food (undernutrition impairs gross and fine motor skills because it compromises the development of the bones, muscles and brain) Undernutrition remains the top-ranking global physical threat: childhood obesity ballooned about 35 years ago. Obese elementary school children had doubled over a decade: 1/6 north american children and teens was obese.
