- Convergence & globalisation -> contemporary trends having significant impact on all facets
of media
- Fourth estate and public sphere -> long standing ideals but continuing relevance in the
media environment
Media convergence
- Blurring boundaries between different elements of the media system and the interaction
between different elements of media systems
- Different parts of media systems and understanding new ways in ways in these media
systems interact
- Can refer to convergence of technologies, content and industries
Technological convergence
- The increasing significance of digital (computer) technologies for creating, distributing and
exhibiting media content
- Blur boundaries between content creators and audiences/ users such as Myspace, Facebook,
YouTube, Twitter

- Netflix -> competing with convention television
- Radio -> most long lasting of traditional media
o Still affected by technology due to streaming/music streaming services (such as
Apple music, Spotify)
- IPhone now can be used to send emails, take photos, record lectures -> instead of needing
