-educate (agent for democracy)
-accurately inform through surveillance of the environment
-entertain
-investigate
-debate: on important social issues
-comment in current issues and events
-aid social cohesion/national identity
-aid national economic development
-generate revenue through advertising
What is news?
-News is that which we need to know
-And that which we want to know
-News is what your editor says is news

Developing News Judgement
-rumour and gossip isn't news (can be the start of news though)
-facts that are recent and of interest to a large number of people- the ‘new’ in news
-recent includes a new twist of an old story
-accurate, objective, balanced, concise and clear
-credibility relies on all items
-most read pages are page one, general news, world news followed by sport (men) and
supplements (women)
-people like local news that affects them
-readers say they want ‘good news’ stories but in fact read the ‘bad news’ conflict and violence
stories
-most people are culturally attuned to ‘storytelling’ or news transmission in social interaction
-interest, timeliness & clarity
-consequence- how many people will be affected by the story’s content?
-proximity
conflict- includes difference of opinion including physical, intellectual, psychological (radio)
-human interest- anything that stirs the emotions
-novelty- unusual or different
-prominence- who says it- authority figures
