Document Summary

Cost behaviour: deals with how costs change with respect to changes in activity levels. Cost driver: a factor that causes/drives activity costs e. g. direct hour labour is the cost driver of work on a production line. Fixed: in total, remain constant within the relevant range (normal operations) as the level of the cost driver varies e. g. rent per month (varies inversely per unit as it is divided by the quantity produced. Variable cost: in total, vary proportionally with changes in activity level and remain the same on a per unit basis e. g. metres of fabric. Semi-fixed cost: fixed over a moderate range of activity then, rise or fall to new levels beyond that range e. g. increase in rent or supervisors due to greater production. Semi-variable cost: although they are directly proportional to activity, they have a fixed component e. g. electricity bill, service fee + usage. Cvp analysis examines the effect of changes in costs and volumed on a firm"s profits.
