LEC 12: Photosynthesis

• Physio-chemical process where oxygen is liberated and carbon dioxide is consumed

by eukaryotes; plants, algae, and photosynthetic bacteria (cyanobacteria)

o Light dependent, anaerobic form of metabolism

• Photosynthesis has two forms

o Oxygenic – creates oxygen (plants, algae, cyanobacteria)

o An-oxygenic – creating other products other than oxygen using light energy

• Empirical equations:

o Photosynthesis

o Respiration

• Chloroplast:

o + carboxysomes (bacterial micro-compartments containing enzymes involved

in carbon fixation)
