BABS1201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Archaea, Aureus, Gram-Positive Bacteria
Document Summary
The most abundant elements in the universe: hydrogen, helium, oxygen, carbon. The major elements of life are: c (carbon), h (hydrogen), o (oxygen), n (nitrogen), p (phosphorus) , These elements are present in quite uniform relative amounts across organisms. Explain how the diversity of life is classified. Initially, this was done by examining structures, functions and other obvious features. (ribosomal rna) in bacteria. Scientists have classified life into species and broader classifications. At the highest level, life is classified into three domains. These three domains are: bacteria, archaea, eukaryotes. Procaryotes are made up of bacteria and archaea (this is an informal classification) Protists (unicellular, but need to be classified in a better way) There are ten times more bacterial cells in the human body than human cells. They have a range of morphologies (sizes and shapes). Mostly have a cell wall, that can be classified as either gram positive or grap negative, depending on its composition.
