What is security and insecurity: primary mission of un to maintain peace and security. Issues: arms/nuclear weapon proliferation, interstate conflict, human rights, civil rights movements. Syria as a regional neighbor of instability, concerns about possible land grabs, possible terrorists, mainly looking at foreign armies: very essence of being a state sustaining sovereignty and territorial integrity, critical studies. Critical security studies are an umbrella term that represents strands of: liberalism, marxism, post-structuralism, post-colonialism, feminism etc, barry buzan et al. Tensions around cyprus: traditional scholars: classic state vs. state tension, engagement with history and the way that greek state represents itself . For 400 years up to 1821, greece occupied by ottoman empire. In wake of 2008 gfc, greek parliament struggling to cope with debt and eco contractions austerity measures by imf, european commission etc. Formal liberal institutions can help to mitigate against insecurity.
