Although the research project was originally focusing on class differences on educational outcome but it extended to gender because during the process of interviewing parents and teachers, the difference between gender has become prominent. The founding of the research project influence the first publication of connell"s research on gender: the concept of hegemonic masculinity was first used to refer to particular behaviour that the society consider as masculinity in general. Men became manlier to maintain their social position due to the fear of women taking over their roles.
